Flavour Boost: exploring the world of cooking with herbs:

Zhoug recipe

I’m passionate about growing my own herbs and incorporating them into meals. In my garden I grow rosemary, parsley, basil, ginger, turmeric, chillies, sage, and peppermint. I also grow vegetables and fruit trees.

Cooking with herbs is a great way to add flavour, colour, and nutrition to your meals. Herbs have been used for centuries to enhance flavour. Additionally, pairing herbs with other ingredients can create a unique flavour that will make your meals more enjoyable. Herbs are also incredibly versatile and can be used in a variety of dishes, salads, and soups and they can help boost the immune system, improve digestion, and even reduce inflammation. Plus, using herbs instead of processed seasonings can help you create flavourful dishes that are much healthier for you.

Here are some of the many benefits of cooking with herbs:

  • Herbs deliver a boost of flavour without added sugar, fat, or salt.

  • They provide essential vitamins and minerals, like vitamin A, vitamin C, and potassium.

  • Herbs can improve digestion and help reduce inflammation.

  • Many herbs are known for their antioxidant properties, which can help fight disease.

  • They can help reduce blood sugar levels and improve heart health.

Zhoug is a spicy and flavourful condiment that originated in Yemen and is commonly used in Middle Eastern and Israeli cuisine. Traditionally the spices were grounded in a mortar and pestle. We used to make it every Friday for the Shabbat (Saturday night) dinner. It’s an essential dish that complements our traditional food.

It is typically made from a blend of coriander (cilantro), garlic, chillies, olive oil, and spices, which gives it a unique flavour that adds an extra layer of flavour to dishes. It can be used as a dip, a spread, or as a marinade for meats and vegetables. It is great served on its own or mixed with other ingredients to create a delicious and complex flavour. Try it with hummus, falafel, pita bread, or even mixed into a salad! With its vibrant green colour, Zhoug is sure to bring a pop of colour to any dish. So, why not give it a try and enjoy a tasty new flavour today?

Time to get creative and enjoy your homemade Zhoug!
